Workers' Educational Association,(WEA)
British organization founded 1913 to provide
adult education. It had its origins in
classes on cooperation organized by Albert
Mansbridge, a clerk at a cooperative store
near Toynbee Hall, where meetings were held.
Funding was obtained from the Co-operative
Union, trade unions, local education
authorities, the Board of Education, and
universities. The WEA used a tutorial system
that drew on lecturers in higher education
and more recently its activities have
depended upon the extramural departments of
universities.
